“Chief” died at 12:02 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, 2023, in the home of his brother, surrounded by family and those who loved him deeply.

“Chief”, 67 years old, was born Anthony Dale Smith on April 11, 1956, in Talahina, to Gene and Jackie (McKinney) Smith. He grew up in the Pleasant Valley area, east of the North Fork River and west of Otter Creek. As a child, Chief loved most running the countryside with his brothers Tim, Felix, Matt, David and Tom. He loved bringing home crawly critters to his younger sisters, Wyonzia, Noel and Tatum. His family farmed as a way of life, seemingly, always recruiting new hired hands, that Brother-man would run them off with his orneriness and horseplay. These attributes never fully abandoned him.

Chief began his education at Snyder Public Schools, spending one year at Riverside Indian School. He made lifelong friends whom he brought home often, some never leaving. He married Karen Norman in 1976, making their home in Snyder and fathering sons, Quanah and Clayton. Chief loved his life his own way, in his own world. Smiling and laughing with friends and family for 67 years. He enjoyed traveling, being outdoors was his true element, and he loved with his whole heart.

He is survived by his oldest son: Quanah Smith and wife Meghan and their children, Teaghan, Jentry, and Kalie of Snyder; youngest son: Clayton Smith and his wife Cynthia and their children, Corbin and Caydence of Snyder; older brothers: Tim Smith and wife Rita of Tipton, Felix Smith of Mountain Park; younger brothers: Matt Smith and wife Terry of Danbury, Texas, Tom Smith of Snyder; his three sisters: Wyonzia Wookey of Frederick, Noel Head of Waynoka, and Tatum Smith and her Dougie-love also of Waynoka. He is also survived by COUNTLESS nieces, nephews and cousins.

Chief was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary, brother David and his sister-in-law, Miss Pat.
