Oma Lynn Buchanan

Oma Lynn Buchanan was born December 4, 1934, at her grandmother’s home in Lawton, to parents Frank and Verna Rae Sommers. She gained her wings on Monday, February 5 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital with her family by her side.

Visitation will be from 1 until 8 p.m., Thursday, February 8, at Ray & Martha's Funeral Home in Hobart.

Graveside service will be at 4 p.m., Friday, February 9, 2024, at Spring Hill Cemetery, Cooperton, under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home.

Oma followed her father, a teacher, to three different Saddle Mountain area grade schools. When Oma was eleven her family’s lives changed forever when her father died in a calf roping incident. She and her sisters began school at Cooperton where she graduated in 1953. Oma was the middle sister. Barbara, Oma, and Belle were raised by their mother in their beloved Wichita Mountains near Saddle Mountain. Oma recently said Saddle Mountain would always be her hometown!

Verna Rae made sure all three of her daughters furthered their education. Oma attended Cameron College; she was on the very first drill team Cameron had. While the love of her life, Pat Buchanan, was away in the Army she switched to a cosmetology school in Lawton and in later years went on to get her instructor and inspector license. She worked for almost 50 years, mostly in her home beauty shop.

Pat returned from Korea and on November 27, 1955, Oma and Pat were married at the Holy City in the Wichita Mountains. They made their home south of Cooperton. Pat died in 2003, but Oma remained at home until her death.

Oma was a devoted mom of three children, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother to eight. She was a woman of many hats: hairdresser, census taker, Elkview hospital employee working with swing bed patients, cook, cotton chopper, fence mender, poem and story writer, class parent, Bible school and Sunday school teacher, 4-H helper, cemetery secretary, this list could go on and on. She was a member of the 4-U Extension club, the Kiowa County Cowbelles.

Oma’s door was always open to friends and family, including children from Tipton Home. Her community, friends and her church, the Roosevelt church of Christ, were all valued by her. She read her Bible every day, prayed many times a day, and rarely complained or had a negative word to say about anyone. She never met a stranger, but if she did it wasn’t long before she knew all about them. She loved to visit.

She is survived by her daughters: Micah Treadwell, Frederick, and Nell Jennings, Roosevelt, and companion Bill Tillman; her son, J. Todd Buchanan, Cooperton; grandchildren: Ethan Treadwell; Paige Jacobs and husband Derek; Garret, Gates, and Gatlin Jennings; great-grand- children: Linney and Autry Treadwell; Tucker and Jaycee Jacobs; Remington, Ridlee, Aceleigh, and Journee Jennings; her beloved brother-in-law, Dean Reeder and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pat; her sisters, Belle Reeder, and Barbara and husband Chester Buchanan; and son-in-law, Buddy Treadwell.
