Temporary Closure of Mt. Scott Roadway
Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will temporarily close the Mount Scott Roadway to vehicle traffic, due to a damaged guardrail. Recent damage to the guardrail has left it extruding into lanes of traffic. In the interest of public safety, Refuge management has made the difficult decision to temporarily close the road to vehicle traffic. Refuge regulations allow refuge managers authority to restrict uses on refuge lands “…in the event of a threat or emergency endangering the health and safety of the public or property…” We anticipate that this closure will be brief and Mount Scott should be re-opened by Friday, January 27, 2023.
Though Mt. Scott remains closed, there are plenty of other locations to explore within the Refuge. Visitors looking for similar scenery might explore the Quanah Parker Dam, the hike to Little Baldy, the area near Jed Johnson Tower, Quetone Point, the Narrows trail or the Kite Trail. Refuge staff and volunteers are available daily at the Visitor Center (located near the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 115) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and can provide further alternative suggestions.
Further road closure information will be available on the Refuge website at: www.fws.gov/refuge/wichita_mountains, Facebook, or by contacting the Refuge Visitor Center at 580-429-2197.
