Cleta Davis Chain

April 20, 2023

Cleta Davis Chain, age 87, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2023, at her home in Hobart, after struggling for many years with dementia. Cleta was born on October 26, 1935, to Fred J. and Floy Ellen (Anderson) Davis at the family’s farm south of Lone Wolf.
She was the eighth of nine children. She attended the Soldiers Spring one-room schoolhouse in the Mt. Tepee area through the eighth grade and graduated from Lone Wolf High School in 1953.

Cleta traveled to Rock, Minnesota, where she married Garland Ray Chain on June 11, 1956, as this was where he was working at the time. They had two sons, David Ray and Jeffery Lynn and made their home in Cooperton. She worked many types of jobs for many people in and around the Cooperton area and Hobart.

She also worked at Chain’s Garage in Cooperton where she wore many hats. Cleta was parts manager at Braun and Son Implement, and worked at Hobart Farm and Garden for many years and continued to work part time until she was 80 years old.

They also farmed and ranched on their property and also leased a nearby ranch for several years where they enjoyed living in the mountains. Cleta always had a wonderful garden, loved sharing her home grown produce and loved to do yard work. She cooked, sewed and, of course, was jack of all trades for her family. She was an avid reader, loved to crochet, a collector of Precious Moments and Mickey Mouse memorabilia, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles. While living in Hobart, along with her sisters, Cleta helped care for her mother for several years. Cleta was raised to work hard on the family farm and continued with this work ethic throughout her life. She loved her family, loved spending time with her many siblings, in-laws and their families in large family gatherings. She loved her children, granddaughters and enjoyed her two great-grandchildren.

Cleta was on the Cooperton Valley School Board, was a strong supporter of the county museum and a longtime member of the Kiowa County Historical Society and the Kiowa County Genealogical Society. She was on the planning committee who planned, organized, and funded the Mt. Tepee Area Monument in the farming area where she was raised. She was proud that her family’s farm has been in the family for over a century.

Survivors include her son David Chain and wife Galeen, Hobart, one granddaughter, Krista Britton and husband Greg, Elk City, two great-grandchildren, Emersyn (Emmie) Abigail Britton and Brysen James Britton, Elk City, three sisters-in-law Nancy Davis, Lone Wolf, Glenda Chain, Weatherford, Virginia Chain, Geronimo, brothers-in-law: Leon Chain, Altus, and Jerry Harms, Snyder, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
