Notes from Code Enforcement

The courtesy dumpsters the trash company provides are for the citizens who pay a monthly trash/water bill to use if they have extra trash or possibly one item that won’t fit in their polycart during the week. If they are full, surely overflow trash can be held until Thursday when the trash truck comes around. Or maybe citizens would prefer a paid city worker come pick it up before he goes to repair the water leak that has the whole town shut off?
We have a problem in the City of Snyder that has been ongoing for the past couple of years. Every time it gets brought up everyone wants to complain about it, but no one has any suggestions on how to fix it. So……. I’m coming to the readers and the citizens of the city for suggestions on how to fix a problem.
About two years ago the courtesy dumpsters the City gets as part of our trash contract were consolidated on 4th Street west of Farmers Co-op, on their property. These dumpsters were to assist residents who had excess trash during the week that would not fit in their polycart, putting moving boxes in, and the occasional large item that couldn’t wait for bulk trash.
Almost immediately, there were problems with people overfilling the dumpsters, putting mattresses, couches, appliances and other items not allowed for trash collection. It was also noted that people from out of town who don’t have a water/trash account were taking advantage of them.
Loose trash has been a constant problem that neighboring property owners have complained about. Stuff is piled on the ground around the dumpsters without any attempts to put it in the dumpsters and the dumpsters have been piled to the point it is a safety hazard for the driver to attempt to empty the dumpster into the truck.
Currently the city employees are considering recommending to the city council that these dumpsters be removed and the only extra trash service will be for citizens who have water/trash accounts, which is the roll off box at the dog pound west of town. That is available Monday thru Thursday from 8 am to 4:30 pm and requires the citizen to contact City Hall to have someone open the dump site.
I will gladly take suggestions on how to fix this problem. You can contact me at City Hall or contact your councilman with your comments and suggestions. Thank you.
As always, I can be contacted at City Hall or 569-2119 ext 3.
